چکیده

The metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint is crucial for hand function, but the joints are frequently affected by arthritis, leading to pain and disability. Joint replacement implants are used to replace the diseased MCP joint, but current and past designs have had varying success. This paper presents a new MCP joint prosthesis based around an idea of combining a single piece elastomer implant with a surface articulating implant.

New-generation implant arthroplasties of the finger joints.

Prosthetic replacement in the hand must address such unique challenges as preservation of the collateral ligaments, tendon balancing, and stability. Some recently developed implant arthroplasties of the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints have anatomically designed articular components; others have non-cemented, press-fit, carefully contoured intramedullary stems. The ration...

Bioreconstructive poly-L/D-lactide implant compared with Swanson prosthesis in metacarpophalangeal joint arthroplasty in rheumatoid patients: a randomized clinical trial.

It was hypothesized that the bioresorbable interposition implant might offer a viable alternative to conventional silicone implant arthroplasty in rheumatoid metacarpophalangeal joint destruction. A randomized clinical study was performed to compare a stemless poly-L/D-lactide copolymer 96 : 4 (PLDLA) implant with the Swanson silicone implant. Results in 52 patients (53 hands and 175 joints) at...

Efficacy of Interpositional Arthroplasty with Temporalis Myofascia Flap in Treatment of TMJ Ankylosis

Surgical intervention by resection of the ankylotic mass through gap arthroplasty alone resulted in reankylosis. Attempts have been made to prevent such reankylosis with interpositional arthroplasty. Numerous materials have been interposed between the resected bone surface and articular fossa at the base of the skull. Alloplastic materials such as silicone, silastic, proplast, Teflon, rubber pr...

Experience with Silastic prostheses in the rheumatoid hand. A 5-year follow-up.

Nine patients with rheumatoid arthritis, who had Silastic prostheses (Swanson's) introduced into 34 metacarpophalangeal joints, were reviewed 5 years after surgery. The most important long-term advantage conferred by the introduction of prostheses was pain relief; functional benefit was marginal. The majority of prostheses eventually fractured but this did not necessarily lead to a functional d...

Bioreconstructive joint scaffold implant arthroplasty in metacarpophalangeal joints: short-term results of a new treatment concept in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Swanson silicone implant is the "gold standard" of metacarpophalangeal joint reconstruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. However, durability problems of silicone implants have led us to develop a new technique based on bioreconstructive implants. PLA96 (poly-L,D-lactide copolymer, L:D ratio of 96:4) scaffolds were engineered. Bioabsorption and substitution of porous PLA96 scaffold wit...
